What She Was Really Reaching For

The Private Identity Intel is a weekly letter for women over 50 who have built something and are carrying something they have not said out loud. If this is the first time you have found your way here, you can receive it privately in your inbox. Any email works, including one only you check.

Inside the Public-Private Gap

There is a version of this story that gets told wrong.

The woman finally leaves her marriage. She comes out. Her whole life reorganizes. And people say: she finally found herself.

As if finding yourself is a single moment. As if it happens all at once, loud and clear, with an announcement and a new chapter.

That is not what it looks like.

What it actually looks like is quieter. More ordinary. And, if I am honest, more beautiful than the dramatic version.

It looks like a Tuesday morning where she woke up and did not immediately put on the version of herself other people needed her to be. She just lay there. Breathing. Present.

It looks like a conversation with herself she had been postponing for eleven years, finally started. Not finished. Just started.

It looks like her body relaxing in a way she had forgotten was possible. Not because everything was resolved. Because she had stopped pretending one specific thing was not true.

It looks like being in a room with someone, a friend, a colleague, a woman she has known for years, and not having to manage what she feels. Just feeling it, privately, cleanly, without shame chasing right behind it.

That is the transformation.

Not the exit. The exhale.

I spent years watching women reach for something they could not name.

Sometimes, they reached for me.

One afternoon a woman, married, with a whole life, looked at me in a way that made clear something had been building for a long time.

I asked her directly: “Are you flirting with me?”

She said yes.

Without hesitation.

I stopped it there.

But I have never stopped thinking about what she was really reaching for.

This is what I want women to understand about the work I do privately:

It is not about pushing you toward a decision.

It is not about coming out, leaving, announcing, or reorganizing your life on someone else’s timeline.

It is about helping you recognize what you are reaching for. And giving that reaching a private, grounded, safe place to breathe.

Because once she can finally name what she wants, even privately, even just to herself, something shifts. The body relaxes. The noise gets quieter. The path does not become obvious immediately. But she can finally think clearly.

That is where transformation actually begins.

Not in the leaving. In the finally being honest.

If something in you keeps reaching, you do not have to fully understand it yet.

You only have to stop running from the conversation.

Begin privately with One Private Room.

If something here is yours, you can email me privately. If you receive this letter by email, you can simply reply. I read each one personally.
